Raktamokshana

Raktamokshana (Blood-letting) is one of the five Panchakarma procedures. Rakta means blood and mokshana is letting, This therapy is used for removing or displacement of impure blood from the diseased area of the body.

Rakta (blood) is one of the seven Dhatus (bodily tissues) of our body. In healthy body Rakta improves one’s complexion and nourishes the muscle and other tissues. It has important life function (Jeevana). When this rakta is vitiated, it results in several diseases.

Factors that vitiate or cause toxins in blood are:

• Consumption of alcohol
• Excessive intake of salt
• Sour, pungent, unctuous and heavy food items, stale food, over eating
• Sleeping immediately after food
• exposure to too much of heat/ sun and stress.
• Apart from these, rakta is also vitiated naturally in the Sharad (autumn) ritu

The diseases that are caused due to impure Rakta are many like oral ulcers, foul odour from mouth, Tumor, herpes zoster, epistaxis, arthritis, discoloration of skin, burning sensation, Tremors, excessive sleep, itching, skin diseases, hypertension, vericose vein and many more.

Raktamokshana is widely used & proven therapy of panchlarma in which the vitiated blood is let out of the body and this helps to cure the disease

Leeche therapy is main & important Raktmokshan therapy. ‘Leech’ is known as ‘Jaloka’ and is used in pitta dosha as their properties are opposite to pitta such – being cool, sweet and unctuous. In this process leeches are put on certain parts of the body and allowed to extract blood, for 20 to 45 minutes at a time that equates to a relatively small amount of blood, up to 15 ml per leech. Medicinal leeches are special leeches. The leeches leave behind small, Y-shaped wound that usually heals without leaving a scar.
